English Bread and Butter pud and snow

Well it snowed, then it snowed and now its still snowing and not really meant to stop until Wednesday! In the UK we just are not equipped to deal with the white stuff and again the country has ground to a halt. A friend posted this snow plough picture on facebook, now most likely a spoof but it somes up the general mood of the country on how authorities deal with the issue!

To keep us warm and cosy , the boys of the family requested good old bread and butter pudding. Originally called ‘Whitepot’ , its origins stem way back but one of the earliest recorded recipes for it was cited in 1723:

“Boil a Quart of Cream with large Mace, let it stand till it is almost cold; then beat the Yolks of eight Eggs, and put them into the Cream with Salt and Sugar to your Taste. Lay thin slices of white Bread in the bottom of a Dish, and lay on them slic’d Dates, Raisins of the Sun, or what Sweet-meats you please, with bits of Marrow, or of fresh Butter, and lay on another Layer of Bread, Fruit, &c. till the Dish is full, grating Nutmeg between every Layer; then put in your Cream, and lay Slices of Bread and Bits of Butter on the top of all, and bake it.”

Alternatively you could follow the matriach of modern tv cooks, Delia Smith, which is slightly easier! Here is the recipe I follow but tend to omit the cream and just up the milk unless feel extravagant!

Now it would have been nice with a dollop of cream but its snowing and could not be bothered to trudge in the snow to the shop!
