Postcard from the Causeway

We had checked the local weather all week and our last day in Northumberland seemed to be the best bet. The tide timetable also seemed to work in our favour. Getting to the island takes planning .Twice a day the tide rushes in covering the causeway that for a few hours remains uncovered enabling islanders to go about their business and tourists to explore the island .

There is a certain thrill at driving over the causeway with signs warning not to proceed if water reaches a certain point. Indeed some do try to drive through the tide only to get stranded and require the local lifeboats to rescue them ! There is even a refuge box in which to escape , half way along the causeway where the tide can potentially reach the top step.

So here are a few snaps of part of our adventure with 2 excited children ….
